Why Maleficent was written for single mums

I love this film. I think because it rings so true for me as I embark on this journey to become a single mum. The general moral of the story is you can’t trust men. They lie, cheat and steal just for power and will betray you to get what they want. Add in the fact that this film is a Disney movie aimed at children and I can only assume that whoever wrote this adaptation of sleeping beauty was a serious man hater.

I will add at this point that I don’t hate men. I have a lot of male friends and I still enjoy dating. One day I might actually meet one I can tolerate in my life long term. What I take from this film is the fact that the main protagonist is a strong independent woman, who helps to raise a kind caring child without a man in her life. That child grows up to be a hero of the film, uniting two kingdoms, showing that it doesn’t take a man to raise a strong young woman. The only thing that can wake sleeping beauty is true loves kiss, something that Maleficent doesn’t think exists, but it turns out to be a mothers love that wakes her. Again, as I head out on this journey, I already know how much I love the little one growing inside me and this film makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

So to all the single mums out there, watch Maleficent with your kids and show them that you don’t need two parents to be an awesome mum.
